Lawn Update

We’ve recently discovered that our lawn was infested with crane fly larva! To address the problem we’ve hired a gardener to thatch, seed, and bring in loads of topsoil, and we’ve set up an automatic watering system that comes on four times a day. However, some well-meaning person has turned off the water, rearranged the hose, and interfered with the timer. Proper water supply is an important facet of this expensive project, so we ask that everyone leave the hose as-is so we don’t have to do it again.

For more information, please contact Merry Jo Zimmer or Colin McAfee, or contact the office.

State of the Building

All outdoor news this month. We held a work party on July 20 to work on the grounds. Gerhard Schmidtke won first prize for his precision chain-saw-on-a-stick work on the hedges and bushes. Thanks to all who participated! Have you seen the new grass shoots coming up on the formerly crane-fly-larva-infested lawn? This took professional intervention by a professional gardener and Colin McAfee’s lawn sprinkler timing expertise and equipment.

The Aberdeen Fire Department put out a smoldering fire along the First Street gardens, probably from a smoldering cigarette. Thanks to the Good Citizen who called in the fire! Gratitude for Chris and Noble Hyde who replaced a crumbling concrete parking lot bumper. And finally, thank you for the generosity of St. Andrew’s Guild, who will fund tools for the new garden shed.

Coming up: a concrete pad for the garden shed, new railings on the office and front porches, pressure washing, and painting the outside staircase going up to the Sunday School room.

Letter of Thanks

Joy Dosch, who has used our spaces for various musical performances, writes this:

Dear St. Andrews Staff,

Thank you for the use of your church this year—what a glorious space it is to sing in.

Thank you,

Joy Dorsch

Teen Sailing Trip

All high school youth in the Diocese of Olympia, the Episcopal Church in Western Washington, are invited on a trip of a lifetime aboard the historic schooner, Adventuress. We will spend 4 days/3 nights onboard this 113-foot ship, sailing through the waters of the Puget Sound. Along the way, we will learn about navigation and marine biology (Adventuress is a floating lab!); we’ll search for whales and other wildlife; engage in community-building activities; cook meals together; create music and prayer; and even take turns sailing the ship! August 28 – 31. $200/person. Scholarships readily available. For more information or to register: https://youthsailingtrip.eventbrite.com

A generous donor has offered a scholarship for an interested St. Andrews youth. Talk to Betty Paulsen for more information.

Day By Days

New Day By Days will be available soon and mailed to those who have requested it.

Reminders

  • St Andrew’s will be hosting a Holy Hike led by Will Mayes on August 10th at Makarenko Park in Cosmopolis. The hike will begin at 11 am and the mile-long trail is well-maintained and accessible for both strollers and wheelchairs. Along the way will be stops for prayer, worship, and the appreciation of Creation, with a light lunch to follow.
  • The annual vestry car wash is August 11th during and after the church service. Proceeds from the car wash go to benefit the Jeri Trudell Scholarship Fund. Even if your car is angelically clean donations are appreciated, so bring your cars and support our graduates!
  • During the school year the Aberdeen HS Life Skills class vacuums our sanctuary. But during the summer we need people to take over that work. Will Sharpe will do it for the 3rd Sunday of the month. Is anyone available to do it on the other Sundays? Please contact Merry Jo at 360-789-7549 to volunteer.
  • August 31st will be our $2 parking lot sale from 10 am–3 pm. Contact Mert Turner or call the office if you’re interested in selling.

Thank you to:

  • All those who showed up for the Garden Work Party
  • Our Acolytes for their excellent work
  • The Aberdeen Fire Department for dousing a bark fire in the garden
  • The Building and Groups Committee for their tireless efforts to keep the church in top shape.
