Service Time Change
A reminder that we will be returning to 9 am services on Sunday, June 1st
Victorian Tea
The annual Victorian Tea was a smashing success, featuring excellent servers, beautiful atmosphere and, as always, amazing food. The event raised nearly $1,000 dollars. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to make the day special, including those who set up, served, provided food, and cleaned up!
Thanking Father Paul, Welcoming Father Joe
Our deepest thanks to Father Paul for leading our parish for the past year. We wish both him and his wife, Kathie, the best of luck on their future travels!
In turn, we welcome the Reverend Joe Mikel as our new Interim Rector. Please give Father Joe and his wife Nancy a warm welcome on Sunday! Here is a letter from them to our parish:
“It is with a renewed sense of excitement that we, my wife Nancy and I, return to St Andrews having spent a couple of months with you in early 2019. We retired back then and thought we might spend some time with you, but family sickness and end-of-life challenges cut short our plans.
Now we return following the ministry of both Fr Don Maddux and Fr Paul Collins who so graciously served you and the life of St Andrews.
My story is one of lifelong service to the Episcopal Church that began back in 1957 at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Whitefish, Montana. The picture of the pious acolyte circled in red gives proof to that beginning.
In 1967 I left high school and attended Grays Harbor Community College hoping to fulfill my dream of becoming a pro basketball player. Sadly, the coach at the community college couldn’t teach height. While attending GHCC I lived with Fr Don Miller and his wife Judy, which foreshadowed, curiously and wonderfully, this return to Aberdeen and St Andrews.
Nancy and I offer our heartfelt thanks to all as we welcome this opportunity to be with you and join you in readying all for the arrival, in God’s time, of your next Rector.
God bless you and God bless the family of
St Andrews parish!”
– Joe Mikel and Nancy
Service for Pat Schaeffer
As many of you are doubtless aware, parishioner Pat Schaeffer has recently passed away. For those wishing to attend, her memorial service will be held this summer at St Andrew’s. Donations can be made in her memory to the following organizations: House of Initia Nova, OSB and Union Gospel Mission of Grays Harbor.
Prayer List Update
We will be updating the prayer list that goes on bulletins and newsletters at the end of June. If there are any changes or additions you’d like to make, or if you would like to ensure that someone on the list stays on it, please contact the office at 360-533-2511 or email standrewsgh@comcast.net
Day of Pentecost
June 8th is Pentecost, so everyone is encouraged to wear red!
State of the Building
Spring and Summer are the big seasons for the Building and Grounds Committee. We’ve been hard at work with gardening and maintenance projects. The help we receive from other St. Andrews’ members is invaluable and we can always use more helping hands. Recent accomplishments:
- Maury Fox has joined the Building and Grounds Committee and is dedicated to keeping the grounds around the building clean. He has experience working with homeless vets and so has been an asset in that respect too.
- Alice arranged the purchase of new garden tools and stowed them in the new garden shed. Unfortunately, the lock was picked and some of the tools have already had to be replaced. A new, more secure lock is now in place. Eric has been caring for the lawn and is enjoying the ease of the new battery-operated tools. He and Alice planted Fr. Don’s and Carolyn’s fig trees which will be dedicated on Rogation Sunday. With the help of stalwart volunteers, the grounds look beautiful!
- One of the most important tools St. Andrews’ owns is the coffee maker. Recently Colin repaired it. We also purchased a regular coffee-maker for the groups that use the upstairs Sunday School room. Colin coordinates all the building use agreements and recently we visited the Presbyterian Church to see how they handle their building security.
- Chris has replaced some of the downspouts and diversion trays as well as installing hooks in the vestments closet. He has added a concrete retaining structure on the corner where the breezeway meets Giles Hall. He and Doug Zimmer washed bat droppings off the office wall and Chris built a block to keep them from returning.
- Madsen Electric repaired picture spots in the Parish Hall and replaced the bulbs in the can lights.
- The vestry has added cleaning the sanctuary to the services A-1 Performance cleaners provide us.
But maintaining a large, old building means we can always use more help. This is the season for painting projects and we have lots: the inside of the kitchen and old ramp doors need to be painted, the front of the risers on the G Street, office and front doors need to be repainted, plaster has been repaired in the G Street entry way and in the Parish Hall, but they need to be painted. We would also like to repaint the whole G Street entry. Reserved and handicap stencils need to be painted in the parking lot (Chris has the stencils).
If you can take on one of these painting projects or if there are other ways you’d like to help, please let us know. Alice Bertram is the Junior Warden and other members of the Building and Grounds Committee are Chris Hyde, Colin McAfee, Eric Kohl, and Maury Fox.
An Office Visitor
A local fledgling invited itself to prayer and proceeded to mystify everyone with strange noises. Thought to be a young starling from a nearby nest, the bird kindly dusted the tops of the sanctuary rafters, though it lacked the thumbs to vacuum up the mess. After nearly two days of hard work, it allowed itself to be gently herded into the office and out the door, where it no doubt will have wild tales to tell its friends!
Coffee Hour
We are in need of coffee hour hosts for several upcoming Sundays. If you are interested, the sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board across from the kitchen.
Prayer Chain
If you, a friend, or a family member are in need of prayer, please contact Laurel Sheffield with the details you are comfortable sharing at laurelcsheffield@gmail.com or 859-457-0550 (text only) and your request will be passed on to the congregation to be lifted in prayer. Prayer requests will initially go out through the church’s email, but if you want to make sure to receive Laurel’s emails going forward, make sure to add hir email address to your address book!
